RJ is originally from Windber Pennsylvania, a small coal mining town in PA. He moved to New York in November of 2004 with his family and soon enlisted in the Marine Corps, deploying as an infantryman to Fallujah, Iraq in 2005-06 and a member of the 26th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) in 2007. Upon returning to the civilian world, RJ earned an associate degree in Physical Education and completed his bachelor’s at Ithaca College in 2013. Life took a turn for the worse while RJ suffered from an untreated Traumatic Brain Injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Substance Abuse Disorder. This helped RJ begin a true readjustment to non-military life. Today he feels blessed to work with vets at Compeer and to also be a co-founder of Rochester American Warriors Hockey 501c3 and to have a purpose driven life.

“There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that the outstanding Compeer staff does to throw events, put on activities, and cultivate relationships, and it makes a profound difference — not only in the lives of the youth and adults we serve, but in their extended families and the volunteers themselves.”

— Steve Simpson, Compeer Board Chair
